What is kitesurfing like in Galicia?

Galicia is an excellent place for kitesurfing, as thanks to our almost 1,500 km of coastline, we have all kinds of spots, with waves for kitesurfing enthusiasts, flat water for freestyle fanatics, and calm waters for those who need to learn.

To begin with, it is useful to give a brief explanation to clarify what kitesurfing is.Kitesurfing (or kiteboarding) is a water sport in which we use a kite that is propelled by the wind, allowing us to glide over the wateron our board. You can practice kitesurfing both in waves and in calm waters.

To begin with, you usually learn with a symmetrical board called a Twintip. Once you have mastered the basic maneuvers, this type of board will allow you to jump, do freestyle tricks, or simply sail and go on long trips or crossings. If you like the feeling of surfing waves, you'll love Surfkite, which uses a board very similar to a surfboard. As you can see, kitesurfing can be practiced in calm waters or in places with waves of different sizes.

Don't hesitate to come and try kitesurfing in Galicia, and we'll show you the fantastic spots in A Coruña and Pontevedra.

Is kitesurfing safe?

Kitesurfing is a very safe sport, as evidenced by the fact that more and more people are taking it up. As with any other extreme sport, you must follow the safety measures we teach you during the course. It is very important to learn with an experienced instructor, as your future safety will depend on the knowledge they impart to you.

Good training

A good kiter must master the technique and know the preferences and rules of navigation on the water. You must know how to use the safety equipment that comes with your gear.

Knowing how to identify risks

You must learn to identify safe areas both for sailing and for handling your kite from land.

Equipment review

You must check that your equipment is in optimal condition; lines, kite, harness, and safety systems such as the quick release must work perfectly.

Never sail alone

Kitesurfing is a social sport, not only because it's more fun to ride with friends, but also because it's much safer.

Keep weather conditions in mind

Always check the forecast before setting out, and do not go out if there is a storm, or if sea conditions exceed your skill level.

Frequently asked questions

You don't need to be fit to kitesurf, although it will obviously be easier to learn if you are. The kite is pulled by the wind, and you are connected to it by a harness, so no great effort is required. However, as with any sport, you will progress faster if you have a minimum level of fitness.

The secret to learning kitesurfing is consistency. Once you get on the board, you'll progress very quickly.

There is no age limit for adults; we even have students aged 65 at our school. If you have led an active lifestyle, you can learn at any age; it just depends on your agility and ability in the water.

We also teach children aged 9 and above, using kites adapted to their weight and size.

We have students of all ages in our kitesurfing courses in Galicia.

As good Galicians, we would say "it depends." There is no set number of hours or days; the speed of progression varies from person to person and will always depend on factors such as the student's ability, the conditions at the spot (flat water and constant wind are preferable), and, of course, the quality of your instructor.

Above all, once you have started, don't give up. Consistency is essential in this sport. Especially in the early stages, consistency is a key factor for success.

In our kitesurfing courses in Galicia, we take you to easy spots where you can learn and progress.
