Windsurfing is not for nostalgic people

We've heard it many times: windsurfing is no longer popular and is a vintage sport. Well, they couldn't be more wrong. Not only is it practiced by veterans who learned in the 70s and 80s, but many young people are taking up the sport because it's super fun and safe. So you know what to do: put on your wetsuit and get on the board—you won't want to get off.

What is windsurfing?

Windsurfing is a water sport that uses sail propulsion. It consists of a surfboard of varying dimensions propelled by a sail. Two characteristics make this sport really different from classic sailing: on the one hand, it is practiced standing up, which makes it similar to surfing, as you have to keep your balance. On the other hand, it involves the use of a "free rig," meaning that the sail and hull are not rigidly connected, but rather the rig is attached by a ball joint that allows it to move in all directions.

History of Windsurfing

Windsurfing as we know it today began back in the 1960s on the Californian coast, with the first patents dating from this period, although there is evidence that this sport was practiced much earlier in more archaic and primitive ways. Windsurfing is an Olympic sport and participated for the first time in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Today, with the incredible evolution and maturity of this sport, it can be practiced in countless conditions and disciplines, such as racing, cruising, waves, or freestyle. These advances, driven by new technologies in design and materials, have made it possible to create equipment that makes learning incredibly easy. With wide boards and ultra-light sails, most students are able to sail on their first day of class.

Benefits of Windsurfing

Because in windsurfing, the rider plays an active role in propulsion and holds the rig with their hands. Add to this the proprioception caused by being on an unstable surface, and this sport will make you strong in no time.

All muscles are worked at the muscular level. Depending on the intensity with which windsurfing is practiced, it strengthens and tones almost all the muscles in your body, especially the arms, shoulders, and core, although the legs and back are also worked.

Mentally speaking, I can assure you that it's much better than going to a psychoanalyst. When windsurfing, you'll enjoy nature in its purest form, and as well as being in a constant battle against the elements, it's a struggle against yourself to overcome your limits.Whether it's a sunny day or a cold, rainy winter's day, windsurfing will leave you feeling relaxed and with a pleasant sense of well-being and balance. Forget about Valium and Tranquimazín, come windsurfing and you'll see how you stop thinking about those little problems that keep you awake at night!

In addition to these physical and mental benefits, windsurfing serves as a connecting element between people with common interests and a love of the outdoors and nature. At our club, you will meet lots of people to go sailing with, exchange opinions and information with, and even make new friends.

Advantages of Windsurfing

Windsurfing, along with kitesurfing, are the two sailing disciplines considered to be "free rigging" as opposed to other disciplines that are considered "fixed rigging." This difference is mainly marked by the fact that the mast (and therefore the rigging) is not fixed to the hull, or board in this case. This makes the sailing technique much more dynamic, more enjoyable and entertaining than traditional sailing, as well as much more dynamic. Here, the crew member is not only part of the steering, but also plays an active role in the propulsion. This means that when you sail on a windsurf board, you really feel the wind in your hands, as well as the water under your feet, creating an incredible sensation of gliding.

Compared to other non-sail-powered sports, it has the great advantage that you don't have to row or pedal all the time. Simply catch your sail, set your course wherever you want, and enjoy the sensation of gliding with the sea and the wind.
