Kitesurfing Trip - Cuba

Why go kitesurfing in Cuba?

Cuba is a kitesurfing destination yet to be discovered, so you can sail away from the crowds and enjoy idyllic spots that are often practically deserted. It is a tropical paradise 1,150 km long with around 4,000 km of coastline. There are well-known spots such as Varadero, Playas del Este, and Cayo Guillermo, but there are also many spots unknown to most kitesurfers, even locals. In fact, many areas of the Cuban coast remain a mystery.

It is a paradise for freestylers, as it has plenty of flat water spots, but also for downwinders, thanks to its hundreds of kilometers of beaches and favorable wind orientation. The downwind trips we organize in the Los Jardines Del Rey Keys are so incredible that it feels like you are floating on air.

Although the waves are generally small, there are days when a cold front comes in and they are medium-sized, good quality, and perfect for endless surfing or jumping.

An exceptional culture

Kitesurfers can enjoy Cuba's rich culture, famous music, cuisine, and the hospitality of the local people. They can also explore historic sites and unique natural landscapes that make Cuba an exceptional destination for combining the adventure of kitesurfing with cultural experiences.

Paradise beaches

Cuba is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, providing an idyllic setting for kitesurfing. You can enjoy breathtaking natural landscapes while practicing your favorite sport. Plus, if your companions don't kitesurf, they can relax on the beach or take advantage of the many tourist tours the island has to offer.

Favorable climate

Cuba's tropical climate is perfect for kitesurfing most of the year. The outside temperatures are very pleasant and the water is warm, allowing us to ride without a wetsuit (every rider's dream).

Stable winds

The dry season, which runs from November to May, brings constant and stable trade winds that guarantee excellent conditions for sailing. The northeast and east winds blow at speeds ranging from 15 to 25 knots during this dry season. This provides a favorable environment for all levels of kitesurfers, from beginners to experts.

Kitesurfing spots in Cuba

Cuba has a selection of kitesurfing spots that suit different skill levels. Riders can enjoy a safe environment to improve their skills or learn the sport from scratch. There are places that are perfect for learning with flat, shallow water and other spots with moderate waves, both sand and reef.

Varadero

This spot is in the north, about 150 km from Havana. Thanks to its incredible beaches, Varadero is one of the most popular destinations, both for kitesurfing enthusiasts and for those who simply want to enjoy the sun. Its extensive coastline and favorable wind orientation allow for downwinds of several kilometers along the peninsula.

The ground is clean sand, there are no corals, so you don't need to wear water shoes. There is also plenty of space to launch and land your kite.

This small town also offers a wide range of accommodation, dining, and nightlife options.

Eastern beaches

Very close to Havana, just a 20-minute drive away, we find this spot with long white sand beaches. Here we find small waves, which can be an opportunity for those who have mastered the basics to progress, but perhaps not very recommended for those who are trying to learn. Waves often appear at the shore, which, added to the side-onshore wind, makes learning very difficult. On weekends, the beaches can be crowded with swimmers, so it may take a little longer to find an area to take off and land comfortably.

The wind is usually a little weaker than in Varadero and considerably weaker than in the Keys. The upside is that you're 20 minutes from Havana, perfect for people who want to combine sightseeing with kitesurfing. There are a few hotels right on the beach that aren't bad, but most are not recommended as they are very basic.

Brisas del Mar Lagoon

A place east of Havana where the coast is flatter, so the waters are shallow and the sea is calm, providing exceptional conditions for learning and progressing, as well as being a freestyle paradise. Same wind as in Playas del Este.

Jibacoa Beach

Located near Havana, Playa Jibacoa is known for its calm waters and steady winds, making it an attractive destination for kitesurfers looking for a more relaxed and less crowded experience. It has two hotels equipped for international tourism where you can stay right on the spot and forget about tedious trips to get to the water.

The wind is usually a little weaker than in Varadero and considerably weaker than in the Keys. The upside is that you're 20 minutes from Havana, perfect for people who want to combine sightseeing with kitesurfing. With the exception of international hotels, most offer very basic services.

The Cuban Keys

Crystal clear waters and white sand. Endless beaches. Nature in its purest form, where kitesurfing becomes an unparalleled experience.

Cayo Guillermo

Located in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, Cayo Guillermo offers shallow waters and a wide strip of white sand beach. It is an excellent choice for beginners and those who want to learn in a more relaxed environment. It is Cuba's most international spot, with several schools and a lot of kitesurfing tourism from Canada.

It is a true paradise for kitesurfing. Waters of every shade of blue and green you can imagine, incredible wildlife and marine life, and all at a fast pace. It has several hotels with cabins and bungalows right on the beach, some literally on the sand. You can downwind from and to Cayo Guillermo. The main spot is Playa del Paso, but don't miss out on sailing at Playa Pilar, one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world according to the specialized press.

Cayo Coco

Similar to Cayo Guillermo but with more sun and beach tourism and less kitesurfing tourism. Conditions are similar to Cayo Guillermo but the coastline is deeper. It also has hotels where you can stay right next to the spot. It is closer to Cayo Coco International Airport, which makes it more convenient when traveling.

Secret Spot

There are several lesser-known cays where we organize downwind trips. They are undiscovered paradises, and we don't want to reveal their names so that this remains the case for as long as possible. If you travel with us, we'll take you there, but you'll be blindfolded.

The wind blows side shore in this area, allowing us to perform numerous downwinds of several kilometers between the different keys.
